Leaf Blight

Cotton

Name: Leaf Blight

Scientific Name: Alternaria macrospora

Crop: Cotton

Description:

  • High humidity and intermittent rainfall are favourable conditions for the occurrence of this disease.
  • The pathogen primarily spreads through irrigation water.

Damage Symptoms:

  • Leaf blight can affect cotton plants at any stage but is most severe when the plants are 45-60 days old.
  • Small, irregular or round spots, ranging from pale to brown, may appear on the leaves. Each spot features a central lesion surrounded by concentric rings.
  • Several spots may merge, forming larger blighted areas. As the disease progresses, the affected cotton plant leaves become brittle and eventually fall off.
  • In some cases, lesions may also develop on the stems.
  • In severe cases, spots may appear on the bracts and bolls.

Preventive Measures:

  • Remove and destroy infected plant debris

Control Measures:

  • Spray Mancozeb or Copper Oxychloride at a rate of 2kg/ha.
