Powdery Mildew

Papaya

Name: Powdery Mildew

Scientific Name: Oidium caricae

Crop: Papaya

Description:

  • High relative humidity of 80–85% and a temperature range of 24–26 degrees Celsius favours the development of powdery mildew.

Damage Symptoms:

  •  The first sign of infection is the presence of white powdery growth on the underside of the leaves. Later, these spots increase in size and cover the entire leaf.
  •  On the upper surface, green to yellow blotches appear, usually near the veins.
  •  Yellowing, twisting, and drying of leaves occur during severe infection.
  •  The affected fruits are stunted and malformed.

Preventive Measures:

  • Apply Trichoderma viride.

Control Measures:

  • At the first sight of infection, apply sulphur dust (30 g/10 L of water) or a 5 ml Calixin 75 EC mixture in 10 L of water at 15-day intervals.
